BMW sDrive vs. xDrive: What's the Difference?

There are two BMW-exclusive drivetrain systems that you can choose from on new BMW models: BMW sDrive (two-wheel drive system) and BMW xDrive (BMW AWD system). On many models, the xDrive system is an optional upgrade, but it comes standard on a variety of BMW SUV models. Find out more about each at BMW Concord near Lafayette, then contact your local authorized BMW dealership to schedule a test drive of these systems!

BMW sDrive

The BMW sDrive system is a two-wheel drive system, meaning it only transmits power to either the front wheels, like in the BMW X2 crossover SUV, or the rear wheels, in sporty models like the 7 Series. Front-wheel drive is perhaps the most common drivetrain system, and usually the least expensive option. Rear-wheel drive will make for a more thrilling driving experience on Walnut Creek roads by enhancing cornering abilities.

BMW xDrive

BMW xDrive is an intelligent all-wheel drive system. All-wheel drive is commonly seen as a standard feature on SUV models like the BMW X5, and provides additional traction support in slippery road conditions.

But what makes BMW xDrive all-wheel different? It is intelligent all-wheel drive technology that can adapt in real-time to road conditions and wheel slip. How does the BMW xDrive work:

  • It works in conjunction with BMW Dynamic Stability Control to monitors road conditions.
  • If the sensors detect slippery surfaces or loss of traction, the electronically controlled system sends power to the wheel or wheels with the most traction.
  • This means you can maintain control and enjoy more responsive handling for a better drive.

Which Models are Available with BMW xDrive and BMW sDrive?

  • Models with Standard sDrive: BMW 7 series, X1, X2, X3, X6, Z4
