What is Tire Rotation?

What is tire rotation? This is a term and service that you have heard many times during a routine service appointment at the BMW Concord service center. However, some drivers may not know the meaning behind it. In short, a tire rotation is essential in maintaining traction, it prevents blowouts, and it even improves the fuel economy of your BMW vehicle.

What Does Rotating Tires Mean?

Luckily, a tire rotation is fairly easy to understand: tires are moved from one position on a vehicle to another. In most cases, the front tires will move to the rear and the rear tires will now be in the front. With that said, they may change sides, so what was the rear left tire ends up as the front right tire.

Because most vehicles cars will carry most of the weight at the front, the front tires will typically wear out faster. Tire rotation is done to prevent uneven wear, which is essential for their longevity. Whether you’re sticking to short commutes between Walnut Creek and Lafayette or making a cross-country drive from Alamo, you want your tires in the best shape possible.

What Does Tire Rotation Do?

  • Maintains Traction: When tires wear down, they start to lose tread depth. A loss of tread depth means traction is reduced, and it can affect your ability to control your vehicle during certain situations.

  • Prevents Uneven Tire Wear: It helps make sure that all of the tires have the same amount of tread.

  • Prevents Blowouts: Tires become more likely to fail as they get worn down. If you’ve ever had one blow out as you drive, you’ll know how unpleasant and potentially dangerous it can be.

  • Improves Performance: Tires working together that have uneven wear often produce vibration, which you will eventually feel through the steering wheel.

  • Maximizes Efficiency: Worn tires are known to create a drag, strain the engine, and increase your fuel consumption.
