If you are shopping this fall and want a gasoline X5 with all-wheel drive, the X5 40 xDrive is the one you can actually drive home first. If you want to plug in at home, or go fully electric, plan on early 2027 and talk to the dealership about placing an order rather than waiting for one to show up on the lot.
What actually changed from the outgoing X5
The fifth-generation X5 adopts the design language and digital user experience of the Neue Klasse. The changes that affect daily ownership fall into four areas.
More power from the same six
A new turbocharger lifts the 3.0-liter inline-six by 19 hp to 394 hp, with 428 lb-ft. The 48-volt mild hybrid adds up to 17 hp and 148 lb-ft of electric boost, and an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission carries over.
A plug-in that commutes on electricity
The X5 50e pairs a 308 hp inline-six with a 194 hp electric motor for 483 hp combined. BMW estimates up to 44 miles of electric range, and it can drive on electricity alone up to 87 mph.
The first electric X5
The iX5 60 xDrive is the first all-electric vehicle built at Plant Spartanburg. It uses an 800-volt system, a standard NACS charging port and DC charging of up to 460 kW, which BMW says takes the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes.
A new cabin and new screens
A 17.9-inch Central Display, BMW 3D Head-Up Display and BMW Panoramic Vision across the base of the windshield are standard. A 14.6-inch passenger screen is optional.
The wheelbase is 2.4 inches longer than before. Standard equipment also includes a panoramic glass roof, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12-speaker HiFi system, 2.5-zone climate control, adaptive suspension and 21-inch wheels. Driving Assistant Plus and Lane Keeping Assistant are standard. The optional Highway Assistant allows hands-free driving on suitable limited-access highways at speeds up to 85 mph, and an adaptive two-axle air suspension is on the options list.
Which 2027 X5 fits Diablo Valley driving?
Match the powertrain to your commute and whether you can charge at home. For Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Danville drivers:
- Mostly short trips and a garage outlet: X5 50e xDrive. BMW's preliminary 44-mile electric estimate covers a lot of local errands and school runs without starting the engine, and the gasoline engine is there for a Tahoe or Monterey weekend.
- Long highway days on I-680 and I-80: X5 40 xDrive. It needs no charging plan, it is the first version on sale, and all-wheel drive is standard for wet winter mornings and mountain roads.
- Already charging at home, or want zero fuel stops: iX5 60 xDrive. The 435-mile preliminary estimate and fast DC charging make it the only electric X5 so far; bidirectional charging lets it power devices, a home or another EV with the right equipment.
- Rear-wheel drive is fine and price matters: X5 40. It has the same 394 hp engine as the xDrive model at a $69,800 base MSRP, and arrives in the first quarter of 2027.

Read the table this way. If a third row is a must, the Q7 and GV80 both list one as standard and the new X5 launch materials do not, so measure the X5 against how often you actually carry more than five. If you want a plug-in or fully electric version of the same SUV, only the X5 offers both. The Q7's new V6 is the most powerful gasoline engine of the three, while the GV80 has the lowest published entry price.
