How Far Can the 2027 BMW iX3 Go on a Charge in East Bay Heat and Cold?

The 2027 BMW iX3 50 xDrive carries an EPA-estimated range of up to 434 miles with its no-cost 20-inch summer tires, and 383 miles on the standard 20-inch all-season tires. Published fleet testing suggests a typical Concord or Walnut Creek summer afternoon costs only a few percent of that, while a 100-degree heat wave or a freezing Tahoe weekend costs far more. This guide shows what the published data says, what it could mean for an iX3, and how charging works at home in Contra Costa County and on the road.

Updated October 2026.

Short answer: On an ordinary East Bay day, expect an iX3 50 xDrive to stay close to its EPA figure: 383 miles on standard all-season tires or up to 434 miles on the summer-tire setup. Recurrent's study of about 30,000 EVs found an average loss of only 5% at 90°F, rising to 17 to 18% above 100°F, and cars kept about 78% of their best range at 32°F and 70% at 20°F. On charging, BMW rates the iX3 at up to 400 kW on an 800-volt DC station, 10 to 80% in 21 minutes, and about 185 miles added in 10 minutes. It has a NACS port as standard, the same plug Tesla Superchargers use.

The official iX3 range and charging numbers

BMW of North America announced US pricing and EPA range for the 2027 iX3 50 xDrive on May 7, 2026. It is the first Neue Klasse model, built on BMW's sixth-generation eDrive with cylindrical battery cells and an 800-volt architecture. These are the figures that matter for range and charging.

The "up to 434 miles" headline belongs to one specific configuration. BMW's release lists an EPA range and efficiency rating for each wheel and tire package, and the standard car is the 383-mile version. Tire type drives the spread: on 20-inch wheels the summer tires add 51 miles over the all-season set, while at 21 inches the two packages are within a mile of each other.

As of October 2026: the iX3 50 xDrive starts at $61,500 plus $1,350 destination and handling, per BMW of North America. Pricing excludes tax, title, registration and dealer fees. BMW set the US launch for September 25, 2026, and electrive reported that deliveries started early because of demand. BMW's US release does not list battery capacity, so we don't quote one.

How temperature changes EV range, according to published testing

No independent lab has published a US hot-and-cold range test of the new iX3 yet. What does exist is large-scale testing of other EVs, which shows a consistent pattern: batteries and cabins are happiest around 70°F, mild heat costs little, and cold costs the most because heating a cabin takes more energy than cooling one. The table below collects the published figures we used. The two sources measure differently, so read each column on its own terms.

Share of range kept by temperature, from published testing of other EVs (not iX3 data).
TemperatureRecurrent fleet data (about 30,000 US EVs)AAA lab test, 2019 (five EVs)

90°FAbout 95% (5% loss)Not tested
95°FNot reported About 83% with A/C on (17% loss); about 96% with no climate control
100°F and upAbout 82 to 83% (17 to 18% loss)Not tested
32°FAbout 78% on average; best model 88%, worst 69%Not tested
20°FAbout 70% on average About 59% with heat on (41% loss); about 88% with no climate control

Recurrent compares each car with its own best range in ideal weather, usually between 70°F and 80°F, so its figures describe real driving with climate control in use. AAA ran five EVs on a dynamometer in a climate chamber, which isolates the effect of heating and air conditioning but uses older vehicles. Geotab's analysis of 5.2 million trips from 4,200 connected EVs found the same shape: cars reached 100% or more of their rated range between about 50°F and 88°F, peaked at 70°F, and dropped to 54% of rated range at 5°F.

There is one real-world data point for the iX3 itself. In the Norwegian Automobile Federation's summer 2026 range test, a European-spec iX3 50 xDrive drove 781 km (485 miles) on one charge in 53°F to 64°F weather, about 1.5% beyond its 770 km European WLTP rating and the longest distance in that test, Carscoops reported. WLTP figures run higher than EPA figures, so that distance doesn't transfer directly to a US car, but it shows the iX3 meeting its rating in mild weather.

What those percentages could mean for an iX3 in the East Bay

The first choice that shapes your range happens at order time: the standard all-season tires or the no-cost summer tires. The selector applies Recurrent's average percentages to each package's EPA figure. It is an illustrative calculation from named sources, not measured iX3 data, and it treats the EPA figure as the ideal-weather starting point.

Calculation: EPA figure multiplied by Recurrent's average range kept at each temperature. Individual cars, speeds and routes vary, and Recurrent's per-model results ranged from 69% to 88% at 32°F.

The summer tires win on paper, and for a Walnut Creek commuter who never leaves the valley in winter they may be the right call. The catch is cold. Tire Rack explains that a summer tire's tread compound stiffens in the 40s, cutting grip sharply, and that near-freezing temperatures can crack the tread. If Tahoe ski trips are part of your winter, the standard all-season package, or a second set of winter tires, is the more honest choice, and the range comparison should be made on the 383-mile figure.

East Bay weather, season by season

Concord and Walnut Creek sit in the warm, dry interior of Contra Costa County. Long-term records from the Western Regional Climate Center's Concord station put the average July and August high near 88°F, right at the top of the 50°F to 88°F band where Geotab found EVs delivered their full rated range. Winters are mild: the average January high is about 57°F and the average low about 41°F.

Summer in Concord and the Delta

Average highs near 88°F in July and August cost an EV only a few percent of its range, according to Recurrent. The bigger hit comes on heat-wave days above 100°F, when the A/C works hard to cool the cabin and battery. Parking in shade and cooling the car while it is still plugged in helps.

Winter in Walnut Creek

With average January lows around 41°F, most Diablo Valley winter mornings sit well above the freezing band in the table. Expect a modest drop on the coldest commutes, mostly from cabin heating, and close to full range on a typical winter afternoon.

A winter weekend in Tahoe

This is where the freezing and 20°F rows apply. Cold air, a long climb into the Sierra and cabin heat all draw on the battery at once. Plan your fast-charging stops for the drive up, and leave a buffer for the return.

Charging an iX3 at home in Contra Costa County

Most owners do nearly all of their charging overnight in the garage. BMW lists 15.4 kW AC charging for the iX3, and bidirectional charging is listed as standard equipment. Your home's electrical panel and circuit set the real limit, so an electrician's assessment comes first.

To turn power into miles, we used the EPA efficiency ratings, which count electricity drawn from the wall. At 102 MPGe the standard car covers about 3.0 miles per kWh, and at 118 MPGe the summer-tire car covers about 3.5. At 15.4 kW that works out to roughly 47 to 54 miles of range per hour of charging, an illustrative calculation rather than a BMW figure.

As of October 2026, from PG&E's electric vehicle rate plans page, which shows no effective date for these prices. Cost per 100 miles is our calculation from EPA efficiency (102 to 118 MPGe) and the listed off-peak rate. Peak rates are much higher: EV2-A lists 54¢/kWh from 4 to 9 p.m. in summer, so scheduled overnight charging matters. If your generation comes from a community choice provider, your bill may differ.

DC fast charging on the road

The iX3's 800-volt system is what makes the 21-minute 10 to 80% figure possible, and BMW specifies that time at an 800-volt DC station. On a charger that delivers less power, the session takes longer. A cold battery also charges more slowly, which matters most on a winter trip.

Tesla Superchargers

The iX3 comes with a NACS port as standard, located on the left rear quarter panel, so it plugs straight into Tesla's network without an adapter. BMW opened Supercharger access to its EVs in North America on December 10, 2025, with billing through the My BMW app, electrive reported.

CCS fast chargers

Some public fast chargers still use the older CCS connector. Bimmerfile reports that iX3 owners can use those stations with an adapter. Ask us which adapter BMW approves before you rely on a CCS-only stop.

Trip planning works best when you treat 10 to 80% as the useful window. Charging speed slows as the battery fills, so two short stops usually beat one long one. BMW's figure of about 185 miles added in 10 minutes describes the quick top-up most drivers use on the way to Sacramento or the Sierra.

Habits that keep more miles in the battery

  1. Precondition while plugged in. Heating or cooling the cabin before you unplug draws that energy from the wall instead of the battery, which is where the AAA and Recurrent losses come from.
  2. Charge off-peak, overnight. On PG&E's EV rates the cheapest hours are overnight, and a garage-parked battery stays closer to its ideal temperature than one sitting in an afternoon parking lot.
  3. Use seat heat on cool mornings. Warming the occupants directly takes less energy than warming the whole cabin.
  4. Watch freeway speed. Energy use climbs with speed, so I-680 at a steady pace goes further than I-680 at the front of traffic.
  5. Pick tires for the year you actually drive. Summer tires add range on paper, but all-season or winter tires belong on any car that sees Sierra cold.

BMW iX3 range and charging questions

What is the EPA range of the 2027 BMW iX3?

The 2027 iX3 50 xDrive has an EPA-estimated range of up to 434 miles with the no-cost 20-inch summer tires. The standard 20-inch all-season package is rated at 383 miles, and the 21- and 22-inch packages fall between 392 and 399 miles, according to BMW of North America.

How much range does an EV lose in hot weather?

Less than most people expect. Recurrent's study of about 30,000 EVs found an average loss of about 5% at 90°F and 17 to 18% above 100°F, mostly from air conditioning. Concord's average summer high is near 88°F, per the Western Regional Climate Center.

How much range will an iX3 lose on a cold Tahoe trip?

There is no published US cold-weather test of the iX3 yet. Across about 30,000 EVs, Recurrent found cars kept about 78% of their best range at 32°F and 70% at 20°F. Applied to the standard iX3's 383-mile EPA figure, that is roughly 299 and 268 miles, an illustrative estimate rather than measured iX3 data.

How fast does the BMW iX3 charge?

BMW rates the iX3 50 xDrive at a peak of 400 kW, charging from 10 to 80% in 21 minutes at an 800-volt DC station and adding about 185 miles in 10 minutes. For home charging, BMW lists 15.4 kW AC.

Can the BMW iX3 use Tesla Superchargers?

Yes. The US iX3 has a NACS port as standard, the connector Tesla Superchargers use, and BMW opened Supercharger access to its EVs in North America in December 2025. Older CCS fast chargers need an adapter.

Does the 2027 iX3 qualify for the federal EV tax credit?

No. The IRS says the new clean vehicle credit is not available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, so it does not apply to a 2027 iX3 bought now.

How far is BMW Concord from Walnut Creek?
